Vancouver, BC – Local four-piece Cass King and the Cassettes are thrilled to announce the release of their debut album “Naked on the Dance Floor”.
“Naked on the Dance Floor” channels the sounds of R&B – informed British postpunk legends like early Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, as well as American garage rock stalwarts like the Mooney Suzuki and the Detroit Cobras. Coming in at a lean half hour, with several songs clocking less than three minutes, “Naked on the Dance Floor” is heavy on the uptempo, dance-oriented beats, and light on the meandering Moog solos. Their lead single “Nice Guy” is a contemporary, #metoo era examination of the darker side of those classic, yearning 60s soul tracks where the singer just knows the girl is destined to be his, even if she doesn’t.
Cass King and the Cassettes’ lineup is chock-full of Vancouver music scene veterans. Their dynamic live shows are known to get even the most jaded Vancouverites up onto the dance floor.
The main songwriters - lead vocalist Cass King and guitarist John Woods - have performed for decades as cabaret duo the Wet Spots, winning the 'Best Cabaret" award at the Adelaide Fringe and a Vancouver Ovation Award for best new musical. So why a rock band, why now?
"There are things you can't express with cleverness; Some things require rawness, realness. They need to be danced or screamed into existence, and when we can do that together with the audience, it's cathartic and exhilarating." Cass says, writing about herself in the third person.
The music leans way back on the back beat, and drummer Adrian Buckley locks it down tight. A veteran of the Tomorrows and the Orchid Highway, he currently hits the skins with Star Collector.
Bassist Brendan Mooney brings drive and melodic inspiration to his playing, giving the four-piece a much bigger bang. Brendan has been a member of The Paperboys, the Town Pants and Edmonton Block Heater, and is a highly sought-after session player.
Add in an emphasis on tight four-part vocal harmony, and you get a true musical hybrid in the spirit of the Ramones covering the Ronettes. Is it Soul? Is it Punk? Is it New Wave? Does it matter?
Naked on the Dance Floor was recorded by Steven Drake (Odds, Winlaws) and Adrian Buckley, and produced by Scott Fletcher (Roswells, Tomorrows, Judys). Available on CD and (yes!) cassette at the release party, and via download at all the downloady-type places.
