Chandra Oppenheim was a child star like no other. As the daughter of acclaimed visual artist Dennis Oppenheim, she launched her musical career at age 10 in early 1980s downtown NYC, writing and recording the songs from her uniquely intoxicating Transportation EPs while backed up by a band featuring members of famed art-rock groups The Dance and Model Citizens. With her hypnotic vocals propelled by the infectiously off-kilter grooves of her adult band mates, CHANDRA’s songs explored the singular fascinations of a post-punk pre-teen.
In the following decades, CHANDRA’s EPs have become regarded as rediscovered cult classics, with her song “Subways” sampled by The Avalanches on their 2016 comeback album, Wildflower. The latest reissue of CHANDRA’s Transportation EPs from Telephone Explosion Records resulted in widespread coverage from The Guardian, Pitchfork, BrooklynVegan, CBC q, Exclaim!, and many other publications.
Since returning to the stage with a new band, CHANDRA has performed at international festivals including Primavera Sound, Part Time Punks, and Sled Island. Recent projects include a live 7” on Third Man Records, and the launch of the label We Are Time with drummer Jesse Locke in 2020. Celebrating and reinterpreting the music written in her childhood, CHANDRA continues her transportation through time.
